Bill and Will's MOTM Analog Synthesizer |

|
We decided to build our Synth in late 2005 and contemplated its layout and began collecting materials for it. When we actually began construction a bit more than a year later, in aught seven, Will and I started this site as a diary of our progress - really for our own reference - and at first, just for fun. So then we listed the modules we built in chronological order - like a diary. Recently, though, we've re-arranged this page so it's better for reference - by module name first. The diagram above shows our cabinets with the modules we've already completed in white, the modules soon to be completed greyed-out, and the reach of the 20in MOTM standard power cables are the red arcs. It also shows the power indicator LEDs per our power distribution plan. The page has gotten so long that we made a table of contents: |

Face-plate Drawings
In the process of planning our modular analog synth, we drew schematic drawings of the faces of the modules. Then, by creating .jpgs from the drawings, we assembled them into layouts to help us determine optimal configuration. We also created a patch sheet to record patches.
We posted the .jpgs here so others can use them to create designs and patch sheets. We didn't make drawings of the power modules (900 & 950) because we're putting ours on the back of the synth case.
As of July, 2007, with Mike, who was interested in using the images and in adding more images of additional modules, we all re-designed them. Together, we developed a standard format incorporating our ideas for what would make good patch-sheet images as well as more accuracy for layout purposes. We'll be posting all these new images over the next few weeks. Huge thanks to Mike.
The little face panel images below are thumbnails that open a window with a larger image. Technically, the panel image you'll see is the background image of that new window. By right clicking on the image you can "Save background as..." or "Copy background" in order to save a copy of the image for your use.
The size of the knobs in the drawings was meant to be schematic. But as of Mid-July 2008, we wanted them to be more accurate. So we've begun updating all the panel designs to reflect the standard MOTM knob (Alcoswitch PKES-90B-1/4) which is 1.01in dia. Panel designs which have been updated have a tiny asterisk (*) next to the thumbnail. While we're at it we've changed the font to the MOTM standard "Alternative Gothic No. 2 BT." We thought we'd done it before, but apparently we hadn't. If there's a module you want a drawing for and we haven't updated it yet, send us email - we'll do it right away.
To download a Power Point file of our 11" X 17" design/patch-sheet to use in developing your own, click here.
We've put our first synth designs at the bottom of this page.

Old MOTM Design 1

This is an earlier design we did for our synth. We originally had fewer modules than we ended up with... and we had planned less room for growth. But we thought it might be interesting to include here.
Old MOTM Design 2

Then we did this one.
Old MOTM Design 3

Ahem - then we did this one. We are beginning to suspect that we have gone insane. - OK - Will is sure I'm insane.
Old MOTM Design 4

Right - this one stood for all of a year... now we know we have gone insane. - Yes - Will is still sure I'm insane.
